Week Eleven : Recovering a Sense of Autonomy
The Artist's Way Book Study
Dear Artists,
Welcome to Week Eleven - we only have two weeks left! I could cry! There are tears in my eyes! You did it! We’re doing it! The spiritual practice of artistry is upon us, beckoning us to be more ourselves at every corner.
I am thinking about grad school, studies, deepening my practices. Seeing what I can accomplish on my own but also what I need more help with. The containers of creation are many, and we are invited to access them in new and abundant ways. Accepting that we are artists, even in the constant pull of comparison we still may feel in Week Eleven, is the way to ultimate success.
AND SUCCESS COMES UP THIS WEEK!
Please note a date change for our second meet up. We will now meet live on zoom for 90 min Sunday September 24 at 9am PST / 12pm EST : (originally September 10) Zoom link at the bottom if this email
WEEKLY REMINDER - YOU CAN HAVE FLUBBED THE WHOLE DAMN BOOK STUDY AND STILL ATTEND.
This week begins with the sentence : I am an artist. Say it a million times in your head before you can’t anymore! I AM AN ARTIST! YOU ARE AN ARTIST! When I hosted Flexible Office Writer’s Retreat I had everyone type in the chat I AM A WRITER. It is a blessing to adorn yourself with this title, wear it proudly.
As an artist I can literally die from boredom. I kill myself when I fail to nurture mt artist child because I am acting like someday else’s idea of an adult. the more I nurture my artist child, the more adult I appear. Spoiling my artist means it will let me type a business letter. Ignoring my artist means a grinding depression
In this section we witness the seriousness of nurturing ourselves. Of creating communities that involve other artists, the willingness to be together and creative on our own but alongside others with the same stamina and hopefulness.
SUCCESS : How afraid we are of success! The shame, the guilt, the embarrassment, the fear it will disappear as soon as we get it. How often we don’t even begin because the thought of succeeding can be just as painful as failing. The faith to carry on is a spiritual practice. I love the part about thinking about finances, don’t stress yourself out just to be or look successful. Keep being within your means (this is a big one for me!)
Build your altar! This part can be playful. I think of my altars as mini art galleries almost. Flooding them with stickers, tiny prints, rocks, sticks. Your altar can be anything that cultivates creative attention and spirit. You got this!
