Finding a rhythm and a rhyme to our research is an art form in itself. Note taking, story collecting, and organizing it all can seem like a daunting task for those of the neurodivergent mind group. Here we are though, finding ways to make our words into sentences, make our sentences into essays, and sometimes turning those essays and longer form writing into books or zines.
The material wonder that arises out of us as artistic output is both a mystery and the work of great devotion. We can invite in a sense of disicipline to the practice of sifting through what we notice, so that it may become something for the people, not just for ourselves.
And yet we also must parse out what is to stay sacred, or better yet : What is to stay sacred for now? What is to stay in the morning pages, the lists, the diary? And what is to come to the forefront for our readers to delight in?
I’ve been writing publicly for over twenty years, sometimes with great precision and sometimes with a lot of chaos. Forever specific, sometimes vague, and always honest, I have found this path to be one that I was called to cultivate. I do not claim to be a great writer, but I do claim to be one. Pivoting between hope and hopelessness I come to the page to understand my own life, and to connect with others who want to understand their own.
In a few weeks on Sunday September 8 I am teaching a class live on zoom called Echoes of Self : Collecting research for personal essays and non fiction projects
This class is everything I know about the behind the scenes practice of writing, not just the sitting down to type part, but the note taking, the witnessing, the noticing, and the sharing.
I hope you’ll join me in this world of words. We also will have two chances to meet together after class to implement new strategies and structures and connect with each other over our work.
